Coan Music Park

Kirkwood Neighbors Organization

Coan Park is the largest park in Kirkwood and is in the process of three phases of community-driven improvements for everyone to enjoy! The park is located off Hosea L. Williams, across from Sammye E. Coan Middle School. Coan Rec Center is designated as a Centers of Hope, providing meals and after-school programming for children. It is also the only therapeutic center within the recreation department for students ages 5-17 with special needs. Over the past year and a half, we’ve worked with the rec center staff, students, neighbors, local businesses, Office of Cultural Affairs, City of Atlanta Rec Department, surrounding neighborhood associations, and NPU-O for input on improvements to the park. The park has original installations by local Atlanta-based Artists and incorporates music and the arts in nature.Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the improvements so far by donating time or money! We’re proud of the recent improvements which include:

New walking trail with beautiful landscaping and new plants behind the tennis courts (Phase 1: Fall 2019 into Spring 2020)
Handrails and stairs to path have been fixed, ramp to tennis courts had handrails installed (Phase 2: Completed Spring 2020)
45 foot wooden archway on path across from baseball field by local artist and Edgewood resident, JD Koth. His work has been installed at Piedmont Park, ATL Beltline, and Fernbank Museum. @jdkoth (Phase 2: Completed Spring 2020)
Mural by Angela Bortone, Dominican-Italian painter and muralist based in ATL which incorporates local neighborhood pride and student’s ideas from the rec. center @angela_bortone (Phase 2: Completed Spring 2020)

COMING SOON

NEW ORIGINAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS - Duncan Shirah, Kirkwood resident & local artist, has designed a sculpture that anyone can play with no musical knowledge or ability. The installation has tube chimes that play four different repeating chords and handmade steel tongue drums. The piece can even be used with play and musical therapy. Plant imagery is incorporated into this unique design @duncanshirah
